3GPP and the evolution of GSM
The demand for data has been growing in recent years for private users but also for the law enforcement and government agencies. At the end of 1990s a need to evolve the telecommunication technology further and in specific the data exchange speed was identified.
The advancement of the technology was expensive, therefore organisations around the world have been working together to provide the required technology.
What is 3GPP?
The 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) is a partnership that was funded in December 1998 to set the standard and specification for the development of a 3G system network based on the evolution of GSM.
Since then, seven telecommunications standard development organizations (ARIB, ATIS, CCSA, ETSI, TSDSI, TTA, TTC), known as “Organizational Partners”, have worked and met on regular base and provided their members with a stable environment to produce Reports and Specifications that define 3GPP technologies.
The project covers cellular telecommunications technologies, including radio access, core network and service capabilities, which provide a complete system description for mobile telecommunications.At the same time, it also provides hooks for non-radio access to the core network, and for interworking with non-3GPP networks, this means that the technology is designed for interoperability between present, past and future technology development.
The research is carried out by members that are divided into 3 Technical Specification Groups (TSG):
- Radio Access Networks (RAN),
- Services & Systems Aspects (SA),
- Core Network & Terminals (CT)
These groups meet regularly to:
- Approve and maintain the 3GPP scope
- Create or terminate a TSG, approve their scope and their term of reference
- Maintain the partnership project description
- Approve funding requirements
- Allocate human and financial resources
The 3GPP goal is the release new technology every 18 months and set guidelines on any related topic.
